Flood warnings in force now during high tide in North East coastal areas

People are being warned to take extra care along the regions sea fronts after a flood warning was issued for hight tide this afternoon/

The Environment Agency issued a flood alert for high tide at 4.30pm for the Tyne and Wear coast from St Mary's lighthouse at Whitley Bay down to Crimdon Park, North Hartlepool, which means that flooding is possible along this stretch.

They say there is the potential for wind blown spray and wave overtopping at Roker seafront between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm this evening.

Sudnerland City Councillor Michael Mordey said: "As always we'd ask people to be careful and not to put themselves at risk if they are venturing along Roker seafront or the promenades at Seaburn and Hendon.

"The high tides we usually get at this time of year coupled with high waves mean we could see waves crashing over the promenades and it's important for people to be aware of this. Businesses in the area have well rehearsed plans in place and the council is working with the Environment Agency to monitor the situation and provide advice and support as needed."
