Foley insists South Shields won't get carried away with first leg win

The Mariners put themselves into a commanding position in the FA Vase semi-final with their 2-1 victory at Pack Meadow.

Foley cancelled out Jordan Nadat’s first half goal before having a hand in Andrew Stephenson’s 90th minute winner.

With the return leg coming up at Mariners Park on Saturday, Shields are being billed as heavy favourites to reach the final at Wembley.

However, Foley insists there is still a big job to do yet.

He said: “We’ve put ourselves in a good position, but we’re not there yet, so there’s no point in getting carried away.

“It’s only half-time in the tie and we’ve got another game yet.

“It’s 90 minutes and we know what we can do.

“I’m sure they’ll still fancy themselves as well.

“It’s up to us to prepare right, which we will, and go again next week.”

Shields’ first half performance was below-par, something Foley readily admits.

He added: “We didn’t start too well, but we came away with a 2-1 win and are going into the second game in the lead.

“We needed a reaction after half-time.

“We were disappointed with ourselves in the first half, but credit to the lads because we gave it a really good go after that and came away with the result.

“To get on the scoresheet in such a big game was nice personally, but it means nothing yet.”
