The withering comments come from former Mayor of South Tyneside Coun Ernest Gibson, who said Marnie has been displaying “disgraceful” behaviour during her time on the Channel 5 reality show.

He spoke out after the 24-year-old was shown flashing her breasts to housemate Saira Khan, a presenter on ITV’s Loose Women, following a day of heated arguments.

Many viewers took to social media to criticise Marnie for the move, accusing her of bullying Khan, 46.

TV watchdog Ofcom received 79 complaints over the scene, which saw Marnie pull down her top and gyrate in front of an unimpressed Khan during Sunday night’s show.

Coun Gibson, a Labour representative for the Whiteleas ward, said: “I feel that she’s an embarrassment to the people of the borough.

“Going on like that doesn’t portray genuine, everyday, normal people from South Shields.

“I think that people who do this kind of thing have no morals, basically.

“We can’t put these people on a pedestal and say that it’s fantastic that she’s from South Shields, because it’s embarrassing.

“We’ve got people like Little Mix and Joe McElderry who’ve made the town so proud, and then you have people like this.

“She’s no role model to young people, and, in fact, I think shows like Geordie Shore should be banned for the example they set to young people.

“They’re just as bad as the glossy magazines that tell girls they need to be thin and spend £500 a month on make-up.

“Her behaviour is nothing to be proud of.”

A spokesman for Ofcom said: “We will assess these complaints before deciding whether to investigate or not.”

Some viewers have called for Marnie to be booted off the show for her actions.

An online vote on the Gazette’s website revealed that 41% of readers wanted to see her leave the show.
