‘Get the education they deserve’ - Jarrow MP welcomes Labour action to cut school costs

The Member of Parliament for Jarrow and Gateshead East has welcomed action to cut costs for parents ahead of the new school year.

The Jarrow and Gateshead East MP has welcomed the government taking action to slash the cost of going to school from September.

Kate Osborne MP has praised caps on branded school uniforms and the establishment of free breakfast clubs across her constituency.

The plans will see Hebburn Lakes Primary School, Fellgate Primary School and Jarrow Cross CofE Primary School offer free breakfast clubs from September - saving families up to £450 a year.

Along with breakfast clubs, all schools must comply with the new legal limits on the number of branded uniform items that pupils must require.

It means that parents will be able to buy more of the “everyday basics” like trousers and shirts from any shop or supermarket rather than a single uniform supplier.

‘Opportunities to get the education they deserve’

Ms Osborne has expressed her delight that youngsters across her constituency will directly benefit from the cuts to school costs.

She said: “I am delighted that we are now getting even more free breakfast clubs in my constituency.

“I have been working hard to ensure that we see even more children locally benefit from these breakfasts.

“We all know that kids cannot learn when they are hungry, and that child poverty in the North East is higher than anywhere else in the country.

“With this investment we will give more local kids the opportunities to get the education they deserve.

“This combined with action on branded school uniforms, something that many constituents get in touch about every year, will save local families almost £1000.”

Easing pressure on parents

Bridget Phillipson, Education Secretary and MP for Houghton and Sunderland South, has stated that families will feel the difference in the new school year.

She commented: “No parent should have to choose between a summer day out to the beach and kitting their child out for school.

“From September, families will feel the difference at the school gates: free breakfast clubs at 1,400 more schools, an end to expensive lists of branded uniform, and more free lunches for those who need them.

“That's the British childhood this government believes in – and why we'll always fight to give every child the very best start in life."
