'Harton is a mess' - Readers react to proposals to expand South Tyneside's cemetery provisions
Shields Gazette readers have had their say on proposals to expand cemetery provision in South Tyneside.
South Tyneside Council is exploring proposals to expand cemetery provision in the borough as one of its historic sites “nears capacity”.
Councillors were told that the cemetery had around 20 years of provision remaining and that future options were already being explored for South Tyneside, including the potential expansion of Jarrow Cemetery or potentially developing new cemetery provision.

Shields Gazette readers took to social media to express their views on the future of cemetery provision in the borough.
This is what you had to say via the Shields Gazette Facebook page:
Gaz Douglass: “There would be plenty room if they were set out properly in the first place instead of just dotted around in no order.
“Harton is a mess.”
Stuart Wells: “Just an idea, stop building houses on derelict land or turning a demolition site into a new path.”
Chris Barron: “Plots are generally sold for 100 years, don’t think this ever gets revisited.”
Melanie Barnes: “Instead of charging to dig down for extra depth for additional family members to be buried at a later date, it should have been standard practice.
“That way a lot more bodies could be in a family grave”
Diana Lambton: “Wouldn't making cremation the standard better? Then land doesn't need to be set aside.”
