Hunt for knifeman following an armed robbery at South Tyneside shop

Police are appealing for information after a knifeman threatened staff at a South Shields' newsagents.

The robbery happened around 8.40am this morning at St Michael's News in Westoe Road.

A man went into the shop and treatened a member of staff with a knife before making off with cash and cigarettes.

The man is described as late 20s to early 30s, 6ft tall and skinny with broad shoulders. He had black hair and a beard with grey flecks. He was wearing a black hooded top and black tracksuit bottoms.

Officers are appealing for information and any witnesses should ring Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 164 150317 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
