The team at the Dogs Trust Darlington have revealed they have more Lurchers in their care than any other breeds, with a wide variety of them available for adoption.
The charity hopes that by shining a spotlight on the long-legged lovelies that people will look to consider welcoming one of them into their family.
Nikki Holroyd, Manager at Dogs Trust Darlington, said: “It is sad we have so many Lurchers in our care as they are such fantastic dogs who are at their happiest when they are with their owner, the one they love.
“Lurchers are loyal dogs that form strong bonds with their human friends.
“They are gentle, renowned for being affectionate so will bring so much love into their owner’s lives. They are also playful and can have goofy characters which never fail to make you smile.
“Despite their many qualities, Lurchers tend to spend longer in our care than other breeds and are often overlooked.
“So, it’s essential for us to dispel any misconceptions that may exist about the breed and urge people not to rule out a Lurcher as their perfect pet. It is a myth that they need a huge amount of exercise and long walks.
“They do need regular exercise like every dog, but they also relish lounging on the sofa; they are experts at snoozing.”

5. Flash (Lurcher)
Flash has a playful personality that will always leave a smile on your face. He would love to find a secure garden to call his own, where he can zoom around with toys or have a snooze in the sun. Flash enjoys a fuss from his carers and is always excited to greet you. He can find being around other dogs quite stressful, so would need to be walked in quieter areas, though he would be quite happy to hop in the car to go on more peaceful adventures. | Dogs Trust Darlington

6. Bailey (Lurcher Cross)
Bailey is very sweet but is sensitive and lacking confidence in a few areas. Bailey wants to be so friendly but at first doesn't quite have the courage to say 'hi'. She can be very bouncy and jumps up for attention but will also shy away at times. She will need lots of positive interactions to help her feel more comfortable with handling, and for vet visits. | Dogs Trust Darlington

7. Dixie (Lurcher)
Dixie is two-years-old and would like a calm home environment to settle into and call her own. She can be worried by new faces but soon warms up after a couple of meets. Dixie will be best to live with older secondary school aged kids. Her confidence is boosted when around her fellow doggy friends so she can live with another dog that is already in the home. | Dogs Trust Darlington

8. Frosty (Lurcher)
Frosty is a handsome Lurcher ready to find his forever home. He adores being in his human’s company so a home with minimal leaving hours and a support system will be needed. Frosty does have a few anxieties so is looking for a family who will be patient with him and willing to work with the team to help with these. | Dogs Trust Darlington
