Jarrow school pupil’s digital postcard showcased in a national Town of Culture gallery
A Jarrow school pupil has had his UK Town of Culture digital postcard showcased in a national gallery.
A Jarrow school pupil’s colourful vision of his “dream day” is helping to put the town on the national map as part of the UK Town of Culture competition.
Jack, a Year 8 pupil at Jarrow School, has created a digital postcard which showcases Jarrow Gregg, Jack’s imagined town mascot, enjoying a perfect day out with his cat, Pesto.
Jarrow was one of 398 towns that entered the UK Town of Culture competition, but it sadly fell short after failing to make the final 15-strong shortlist.
The town officially submitted Jack’s postcard to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the nationwide celebration of towns bidding for the title.

‘I feel famous’
Jack’s artwork was created during a community consultation, which invited young people to imagine, create and share something that would celebrate Jarrow.
The consultation saw 500 youngsters make models, draw, paint, write or talk about what would celebrate Jarrow’s history.
Jack said that he had the “best day of his life” when his class was asked to imagine their dream town.
He added: “I did my crazy drawings of Gregg and my cat Pesto having a great time.
“When I saw Gregg in huge posters at the museum, it was awesome.
“I feel famous!”
Jack’s Jarrow Gregg is now appearing alongside postcards from towns across the country in a digital display in the Museum of Liverpool.
A joyful postcard
Paul Atkinson, Head of Jarrow School, has expressed his pride in Jack for creating the design that will represent Jarrow on a national level.
He said: “To see Jack’s dream day in Jarrow celebrated nationally is very special.
“His postcard is joyful, bold and full of personality, just like the town itself.
“We are incredibly proud of Jack and all of the young people who have helped shape this bid by sharing their imagination, creativity and pride in Jarrow.”
