The defender left for Liverpool in the summer of 2011 after criticising the club's transfer policy.

But the move hasn't worked out for injury-hit Enrique, who has six months left on his Anfield deal.

Newcastle are looking to sign a left-back on loan for the rest of the season.

And Liverpool are reportedly willing to pay up some of Enrique contract to get him off their books.

However, a return for Enrique – who spent four years on Tyneside – would seem unlikely given the nature of his departure.

Enrique left the club soon after making an extraordinary rant on Twitter while on a pre-season tour.

"They don't want spend in the club and bring quality players, that's why everybody (wants to) go," tweeted Enrique.

"The club has allowed all the major players in the team to leave, Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan etc. Seriously, do you think this is the fault of the players?

"This club will never fight again to be among the top six with this policy."

Newcastle, without Enrique, went on to finish fifth that season.
