Last chapter looms for Hebburn Library

Council chiefs have applied for permission to pull down Hebburn Library, following its recent closure.

They say the Station Road building is redundant after services in the town switched to the new £13m Hebburn Central hub, which opened in June 2015.

The move was part of comprehensive changes made to borough library services in the wake of cash cuts.

It saw South Tyneside Council focus provision at four multi-service ‘hubs’. At the same time, some other library services moved to voluntary management.

planners now want to flatten the single storey former library, and replace it with landscaping.

In their application, they state: “Library services have moved to Hebburn Central, therefore the building is surplus to requirements.”

Plans show the site will be top soiled and seeded and a perimeter fence installed.

If planning permission is granted, demolition work is expected to start at the end of August and take five weeks.
