Letter of the week: The killing of South Shields's King Street

Shame on all the councillors and landlords for what I consider the killing of King Street and the surrounding town centre.
Our writer fears that King Street, in South Shields, is dying. Do you agree? Our writer fears that King Street, in South Shields, is dying. Do you agree?

Apart from the parking charges, the fact that the major road works have closed the Jarrow low road for months and there is sometimes a 40-minute drive from Jarrow, they have now stopped people who want to go via the Metro going because it now stops at Chichester and they have to finish their journey on a replacement bus to get to the town centre.

Anyone with a buggy, wheelchair or disability, understandably doesn’t go.

River Island and Next should have been made to locate in King Street.

The council could have imposed compulsory purchase on the empty buildings in order to allow them to do this.

Last week's Letter of the week: South Shield pantomime is a "special show"

However, in my opinion, they decided to allow absentee landlords let their premises go to wreck and ruin instead!

A perfectly good bus and Metro station is being replaced with a new one.

By the time it is finished, apart from someone wanting a curry or going to the beach, there will be no one using it!

I could talk about the relocation of the library and the fact that anyone who wants to, can look through the windows of the swimming baths and see both adults and children in their swimwear, but it's water under the bridge.

I don’t know how they can justify their actions or sleep at night!
