Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) were called out to Frenchman's Bay in South Shields after reports of a "missing despondent person" nearby.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We stood by with our rope rescue equipment while a member of SSVLB engaged with the individual, who after some conversation, agreed to come back to safety and was handed into the care of the police."

The inshore lifeboat from Tynemouth also attended.

The incident happened shortly after noon yesterday.

The Coastguard has issued a reminder that people should call 999 in a coastal emergency and ask for its help.
