Man helped to safety after early hours South Shields pier call out

The emergency services ensured a man was brought to safety after concerns for him on the South Pier in South Shields.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) joined Northumbria Police and Tynemouth RNLI's inshore lifeboat after they were alerted to the pier just after 11.30pm yesterday.

A spokesman for the SSVLB said: "Upon arrival the team met up with police officers who informed us that the gentleman was now walking off the pier to speak with them.

"The team transported a police officer to meet the casualty and escort them from the pier until the were in the safety of a police vehicle.

"Also in attendance was Tynemouth inshore lifeboat, providing safety cover from the water."

The incident was brought to a close at around 12.15am.
