Man taken to hospital after car collides with lamppost and bollard
This was the scene after a car smashed into a lamppost and bollard on a busy route in and out of South Shields town centre.
The red Nissan Juke crashed as it travelled towards the town at around 10am today.
It came to rest after striking a lamppost and bollard outside a number of businesses close to the junction with Erskine Road.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At around 10.15am, police received a report that a car that had been in collision with a lamppost on Westoe Road, South Shields.
“Emergency services attended the scene and a male – the driver of the car – was taken to hospital.
“The road is currently closed while the clean-up operation continues.
"Drivers are asked to avoid the area."
A number of people stopped to offer the driver assistance.
A spokeswoman for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.13am to a report of a road traffic collision in Westoe Road in South Shields.
"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and transferred a male patient to South Tyneside District Hospital."

Ali Sezer, who runs Ali Barber, was sitting outside his shop and says he narrowly missed being struck by the car.
He it is believed the car also struck another vehicle before the collision.
He said: "I was sitting on the step on my phone and I just heard a big bang near to the opticians.
"The car was coming towards me and then it hit the bollard.
"It had coming towards the town and the town hall.
"The driver was shocked and we gave him some water before the ambulance came.
"I was quite calm afterwards, but when it first happened I was very shaken.
"I feel very lucky."
