Man taken to hospital after South Shields road crash
A car narrowly missed crashing into a shop front in South Shields after it is believed the driver took ill at the wheel.
The BMW careered on to the pavement in Westoe Road, just after 3.30pm.
It crashed through barriers coming to rest outside Coffee Zone.
The shop was opened five weeks ago by couple Octavian and Hanneke Lazin.
Hanneke said: “We’re still in shock. It just came in right up to the shop. Obviously it wasn’t travelling very fast but it came through two barriers.
“It looked like the man had taken ill at the wheel. He didn’t look very well.
“The woman in the car was shocked as well.
“It’s just lucky no one was hurt.”
The driver was taken to hospital by ambulance.
