Man wielding an axe Tasered by police on roundabout

Officers were called to a roundabout on Welbeck Road,Newcastle, after reports of a man in distress at 6.50pm yesterday.

They found him with the axe at his feet and he was indicating he had a concealed weapon.

As a result they closed the road and a cordon was put in place.

Following a stand off which lasted an hour and 45 minutes, the 29-year-old approached the Northumbria Police officers "in an aggressive manner" and was Tasered.

The force said he was arrested for "outstanding matters" and taken into custody.

The road was fully re-opened and the cordon taken down.
