Before the announcement that the match was off, Manchester United officials confirmed police were investigating a suspect package in the north-west quadrant of Old Trafford.

Police walked sniffer dogs around the Stretford End and Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, which were the first two stands evacuated.

An announcement had been made for security personnel to invoke 'operation red code'.
