Members of the public urged to stay away from Marsden Grotto Steps
South Tyneside Council has announced that the Marsden Grotto Steps are closed to the public.
Members of the public are being asked to stay away from the Marsden Grotto Steps while survey work is carried out to ensure safety.
Signage, barriers and tape are in place at both the top and bottom of the steps to prevent access to the steps, with the public warned not to attempt to use them.

South Tyneside Council has confirmed that access to Marsden Beach and bay is still possible via the Redwell Bank steps.
Lift access to the beach will also still be available from 10am until 10pm via The Grotto.
The local authority has not revealed how long the steps will be closed for.
Members of the public are being urged to check tide times before visiting Marsden Beach as the access route via the Redwell Bank steps can be affected/cut off by high tides.
