Memory of Aaron '˜Azza' Todd kept alive by sport he loved

Aaron Todd, 18, died after he suffered head injuries after he fell from a taxi in Hedworth Lane, Jarrow in 2009.

The teen known as Azza to his friends was a keen footballer who played for Jarrow Football Club.

Since his death, his former team mates have come together to host a weekend-long tournament in his name at Perth Green CA.

This year’s tournament will take kick off on Friday, May 25, and will also end with live music on Sunday. The tournament has also become part of the annual Jarrow Festival Programme.

Chris Thompson said: “Azza passed away nine years ago but his memory will always live on in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure to meet him and we all count ourselves very fortunate to be those people.

“He was without doubt out of the top drawer and this is our chance to remember him doing something he loved best playing football and being with his family and friends.

“Azza played with the number nine on his back and with it being nine years since his passing it is quite a poignant time to have the tournament this year.

“We have raised over £10,000 since the first event was held something we are all very proud of.”

The tournament will start on Friday, May 25, with Jarrow Select taking on Scaff’s Reunited at 6pm followed by Jarrow Falcons v Jarrow School.

The following day, teams of under 7s and under 8s will compete in a five-a-side tournament, starting at 9am.

The tournament will finish on Sunday with a third/fourth place play off at 10am, a game between family team v Ex Jarrow Managers at 11.30am, with the final at 1pm.

The event will close with live music with the Albino Crocodiles and other bands before a DJ ends the night. Entry to this is £5, children go free.

Throughout there will be refreshments, bouncy castles, face painting and bar facilities.

Monies raised throughout the weekend will be donated to Newcastle RVI ICU ward which looked after Aaron after his injury and Perth Green CA.
