Mortimer Community College celebrates record GCSE results for the second year running
A South Shields school is celebrating achieving record GCSE results for the second year in a row.
Mortimer Community College has continued its run of record-breaking GCSE results for a second year.
The school, on Reading Road, has achieved record results for 2026, with a higher number of students than ever before securing a grade 5 or above in both English and maths.
Simon Hignett, headteacher at Mortimer Community College, has expressed his delight at what the school’s pupils have achieved with their GCSE results.
He said: “For the second year running, our students have achieved an impressive set of results, demonstrating their effort, determination, and the invaluable support of staff, parents, and carers.
“I am delighted with what our students have accomplished. Their focus and resilience have been excellent. These outcomes highlight not only individual achievement, but also the shared strength and spirit of Mortimer’s community.
“The school’s commitment to supporting every student continues to shine through. Students have worked hard, shown real determination, and earned the success they are celebrating.
“Alongside exceptional individual achievements, the overall performance of the year group has been outstanding.
“Maths results remain above the national average, English has seen a further 5% rise, and progress across subjects continues to be strong.”
Mr Hignett also took the time to wish the students well as they now head off to further education, apprenticeships and other forms of training.
He added: “To our Year 11 students, my heartfelt congratulations.
“You have shown real determination, and I am incredibly proud of all you have achieved.
“As with last year, you have set a benchmark for future year groups, and I wish each of you every success for the future.”
