NatWest makes ‘tough choice’ to close its South Shields branch
NatWest has announced the closure of its South Tyneside branch.
Banking firm NatWest has confirmed that its branch, on King Street, in South Shields will be closing later this year as it makes ‘some tough choices’.
In a ‘branch closure guide’, the bank has revealed that the South Shields branch will be closing to members of the public on June 9.
A statement in the guide says: “With the ease of mobile and online banking fewer people are coming into the bank.
“This means we’ve had to make some tough choices about which can stay open.

“So we want to make sure that we keep the branches people are using most.”
It adds: “We completely understand that online banking isn’t right for everyone. Sometimes you want to chat things through with someone.
“We promise that you’ll still be able to talk to one of our team either on the phone, by video or in one of our other branches.”
The upcoming closure means that NatWest customers in South Tyneside will now have to travel Sunderland city centre, Newcastle city centre or the Metrocentre, in Gateshead, to access a branch in person.
NatWest has stated that it will be supporting customers via a face-to-face event to provide them with help to find the right local banking services, a chance to understand the latest frauds and scams, as well as support on all the ways to continue banking with NatWest.
The bank has also confirmed that it will be introducing a 12-week community pop-up following the closure that will be based at a community venue where customers can access face-to-face support.
