Newcastle closing in on dramatic TRIPLE swoop

The club is closing in on a clutch of targets as the transfer deadline edges closer.

Newcastle have already signed three players this month.

But there could be another three arrivals at St James’s Park before Monday night’s deadline.

West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino remains the club’s No 1 striking target.

And Newcastle are refusing to admit defeat in their attempts to land the 22-year-old despite the reluctance of Jeremy Peace, West Brom’s chairman, to do business.

Peace values Berahino, also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur, in the £25million bracket.

United also have an interest in Chelsea forward and former loanee Loic Remy and Swansea City striker Bafetimbi Gomis.

Newcastle are understood to be looking at taking Doumbia and Siqueira on six-month loan deals.

Doumbia, an Ivory Coast team-mate of Cheick Tiote, is already on loan at CSKA Moscow, but the 28-year-old will move on this month.

And Siqueira, 29, is on the fringes at Atletico, having played just seven games so far this season.

Injury-hit United didn’t have a fit left-back for their last game – the 2-1 defeat at Watford – but Paul Dummett is close to a return from a hamstring problem.

They are also looking to sign another striker, and Newcastle will again test West Brom’s resolve to hold on to Berahino before moving on to other targets.

Tony Pulis, head coach at the Hawthorns, yesterday addressed Berahino’s situation.

Pulis said: “Throw the balls up in the air, I don’t where they will land.

“The January transfer window is an absolute nightmare. We’ve got three days to go and I don’t think anything will change with anybody until the time runs out.

“Once time runs out if, Saido is still here, he needs to start recognising that this is affecting everyone and he’s got to get back to what it was.

“It’s been dreadful for us as a football club to have an outstanding player who’s just dropped off because of circumstances.”

United had hoped to avoid any deadline-day drama.

But Newcastle’s pursuit of an experienced Premier League goalscorer is looking increasingly like it will go to the wire.
