Newcastle fans respond to Sunderland plane taunts by raising almost £700 for charity

A plane is set to fly over St James's Park with a banner reading 'AUF WIEDERSEHEN PREM’ during today's match against Tottenham Hotspur.

The mocking is in response to Newcastle's relegation from the Premier League, and comes after a crowdfunding page was created on gofundme.com on Thursday by ‘SAFC AWAY DAYS’.

Four donations have been made, with an anonymous one of just over £1,000 accounting for virtually the whole of the total amount raised. The page says £900 will be for the aircraft trailing the banner, with the rest going to charity.

In response, Newcastle fan Kris Wallace, from South Shields, who runs supporters' site Gallowgate Shots, set up his own Go Fund Me page, titled 'Not Obsessed Though'.

Funds donated to the page will be split equally between the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the Alan Shearer Foundation and the Foundation of Light.

In 24 hours, £662 was raised by supporters.

On the page, Kris said: "We don't need a banner, we don't need a plane.

"We aim to match our rivals GoFund page which is raising money to fly a plane / banner over SJP on Sunday.

"Let's show that despite both clubs being in a dire situation (one more so than the other) that we can still make a positive from a bad situation.

"The rivalry will always remain strong in the North East, but our charitable side (from both sets of fans) will always shine through.

"Imagine if we raised a £1 for every cringeworthy Facebook status, tweet or Instagram post from fans on both sides ? .... We'd smash the target out of the park."
