Newcastle favourites to sign Championship defender

Bookmakers have made Newcastle United favourites to sign Blackburn Rovers captain Grant Hanley.

The defender is 2/1 with BetVictor to sign for the club ahead of Championship rivals Derby County.

Hanley, on a long-term contract at Ewood Park and also said to be a target for Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City, would reportedly cost around £5million.

The 24-year-old Scotland international has a wealth of Championship experience.

United manager Rafa Benitez – who this week revealed that the club is close to sealing "three of four" deals – is looking to strengthen his defence.

Queens Park Rangers' Steven Caulker and Arsenal's Isaac Hayden have also been considered by Newcastle.
