West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino is the club’s No 1 striking target, but the two clubs are understood to be significantly apart in their valuations of the 22-year-old, who is likely to cost in excess of £20million.

And the club is assessing other options, including former loanee Remy, who is expected to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge – either on loan or on a permanent deal – when Aleksandre Pato joins on a half-season deal from Corinthians this week.

Chelsea may also be prepared to loan Remy for six months, though the club’s preference is reportedly a £12million sale.

The 29-year-old scored 14 goals for Newcastle in the 2013-14 season while on loan from then-club Queens Park Rangers.

And the France international – who needs to be playing week in, week out ahead of Euro 2016 – is understood to be interested in returning to St James’s Park.

Swansea City’s Bafetimbi Gomis, available for £7million, is another option.

But Gomis, looking for a sizeable salary, could price himself out of a move to St James’s Park.
