Fulham forward McCormack has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle, who are preparing for life in the Championship under Rafa Benitez.

The Scotland international scored 23 goals for struggling Fulham last season, and was previously linked with the Magpies two years ago.

But the 29-year-old has admitted he would prefer a move to the Premier League this summer.

He said: "I want to be playing in the Premiership.

"I never, ever think to myself I should be playing in the Premier League because there are so many good players playing there.

"You’re a little bit envious because they’re playing against the best players in the world and I’m a tier below them."

Meanwhile, former Celtic manager Neil Lennon admits he was surprised by the decision of former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton to swap Premier League football with Burnley for Scottish football.

Barton has signed a deal with Rangers.

And Lennon told Herald Scotland: "Joey is a good lad and he's got a great personality.

"I'm surprised he left Burnley in the Premier League to go to Rangers but he obviously sees it as the next challenge in his career.

"He had a good season last year and big things will be expected of him at Rangers.

"He will enjoy that responsibility."
