Newcastle United news: Wijnaldum admits Liverpool struggles, Yedlin 'at home' on Tyneside, Toon kid set to make international debut?

The Dutchman was a divisive figure while at St James' Park.

Wijnaldum netted 11 goals last season but was often found wanting when Newcastle needed him most as Rafa Benitez's men failed to avoid relegation to the Championship.

His goals brought about a big money move to Anfield, but Wijnaldum admits he's not quite lived up to expectation under Jurgen Klopp.

The 25-year-old told Sky Sports: "To be fair, I settled in quite quickly (at Liverpool) but I’m not really happy with my own performances, as I know I can do better.

"It is also a new position and playing with new players, so these things take time

"I think when I know everything that I have to do and when I know the players better, I can achieve more than I have done right now."

One player delighted by their own summer switch, though, is United's US full-back DeAndre Yedlin.

The 23-year-old, who signed for around £5million from Tottenham in the last window, says he feels at home on Tyneside.

Seattle-born Yedlin, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, feels “comfortable” in the region.

He said: "That was a big factor in my decision

"When I first came to London, it was a bit different to what I’d expected.

"I thought moving to a big city would be a very cool thing for me.

"But Seattle’s not the biggest city. It’s more like Newcastle.

"I think I’m more comfortable here. That was a big factor in my decision.”

Meanwhile, young winger Callum Roberts has been called up to the England Under-20 squad.

Elsewhere on the international front Chancel Mbemba played the full 90 of DR Congo's 1-0 loss to Kenya yesterday.

While rivals Sunderland's Under-21 side were edging out Hartlepool United in the controversial Checkatrade Trophy, a game in which Tom Heardman started, three Newcastle players got themselves on the scoresheet in the competition.

Luton Town loanee Alex Gilliead netted in a 2-0 win over West Brom's youngsters while Sammy Ameobi was also successful, netting his maiden strike for Bolton Wanderers.

After the match boss Phil Parkinson, speaking to BWFC's official website, said of 24-year-old Ameobi: "I was pleased for Sammy.

"He’s come in and had some good moments off the bench for us, but he’s been waiting for that first goal to give him that lift.

"Wide players can be unpredictable at times. They can have moments when they frustrate but other moments when they produce.

"If you analyse Sammy tonight, he’s scored a goal and put in some great crosses which we maybe could have gambled on and scored from.

"We’re building him up, his confidence levels in himself, and I’m pleased with the win and pleased with the goal."

Haris Vuckic scored one and made one in Bradford City's 2-1 win over Bury.

And finally, the Magpies will have sold out the full 5,500 ticket allocation for the Sky Bet Championship trip to Barnsley.
