The retailer had been rumoured to be taking over the former BHS store site in Waterloo Square.

The unit has been vacant since the closure of BHS earlier this year after the firm went into administration.

However, a spokesman for the company confirmed the rumours are untrue.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm there is no truth in the rumours.”

The store closed its doors in King Street in March 2014 despite a petition calling on bosses to reconsider the decision.

Marks and Spencers had been trading in the town for 80 years and was one of the town’s oldest trading stores.

Staff at the store were relocated to an expanded outlet at Silverlink in North Tyneside following its closure.
