One man taken to hospital after collision closes South Shields road at rush hour

One man was taken to hospital after a rush hour collision in South Shields today.

Emergency services were called to Newcastle Road shortly after 5.30pm and the road was closed for more than half an hour.

Witness Liam Walker said the collision had involved a black BMW and a grey Mercedes : “I was stuck for 45 minutes,” he said.

"The police eventually made it possible for cars to go around but took a while.

"As I was getting guided around the accident by the police, the fire brigade were cutting someone out of the car.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 17.32 to a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision outside Starbucks in Newcastle Road, in which a patient was believed to be trapped.

“Police and fire service attended the scene and we sent one ambulance and one of our hazardous area response teams.

"We took a male patient with a shoulder injury to South Tyneside Hospital.”
