EMMA LEWELL-BUCK: Things that matter to us don’t matter to the Government

It has only been a week since the Chancellor delivered his Budget yet already it has unravelled as fast as his last one.
The worst example of his cowardice was omitting from his speech the real terms pay cut for our NHS heroes, people who have put their lives on the line day in and out.The worst example of his cowardice was omitting from his speech the real terms pay cut for our NHS heroes, people who have put their lives on the line day in and out.
The worst example of his cowardice was omitting from his speech the real terms pay cut for our NHS heroes, people who have put their lives on the line day in and out.

He is a coward who has failed to be honest with the British public about the failings on his watch, that we will be living with for decades to come.

He failed to be honest about the Tories plans for our public services and key workers. There was no mention of schools, social care, our NHS, or our high streets. Because the things that matter to us the most, don’t matter to this Government The worst example of his cowardice was omitting from his speech the real terms pay cut for our NHS heroes, people who have put their lives on the line day in and out, who have diligently turned up to save lives knowing the Government hadn’t provided them with PPE, who have been the only comfort for strangers as they took their final breaths.

They have been told that this is because the public finances are under strain. This in the same week we find out that the Prime Minister has spent over £2 million decorating Downing Street and he and his partner have been receiving secret gourmet food deliveries worth over £1200 throughout the pandemic.

These are the same stretched finances where the Government found £37bn to give to a Tory Peer who also paid consultants up to £6,624 per day to run a falling test and trace programme, the same finances where they found nearly £2bn given to Tory friends and donors for covid related contracts. The same stretched finances that spent half a billion pounds on Nightingale Hospitals that remained empty and are now closing.

Key workers are facing a continued pay freeze and our NHS staff a real term pay cut at the same time as the Chancellor is forcing through a 5% hike in Council Tax. He and the rest of the Government should hang their heads in shame, this is no way to treat those who are selflessly keeping our country going and caring for our loved ones.
