‘Our kids don’t feel safe’ - Resident's concern over historic Jarrow Slake area

A Jarrow resident has expressed concerns over an abandoned wharf.

Following posts on social media over the weekend relating to Jarrow Slake being listed on ‘gay cruising websites’, a member of the public has expressed her concerns to the Shields Gazette.

Jarrow Slake is a intertidal marsh and mudflat area on the banks of the River Tyne, which in the modern day is an abandoned wharf area.

Concerns have been raised about alleged activities at the site after a ‘paedophile hunting’ Facebook group made a post relating to the historic site.

When speaking about Jarrow Slake, one resident told the Shields Gazette that children in the local area don’t feel safe due to the alleged activities happening at the site.

She said: “I live in Jarrow and I find this absolutely disgusting.

“At all hours of the day or night, men are seen in that area.

“Our kids don't feel safe wandering down there now.”

It is understood that residents’ concerns have been flagged to officers at Northumbria Police who cover the area where Jarrow Slake is based.
