Paul Dummett reveals the surprising reaction of his Newcastle team-mates to wonder goal

Dummett netted in the 90th minute to claim a point from a 3-3 draw at St James’s Park on Tuesday night.

However, 24 hours later Steve McClaren’s relegation-threatened side dropped a place to 19th in the Premier League after Sunderland won 4-2 at Swansea City.

And Newcastle take on West Ham United in desperate need of a first win in more than a month.

Dummett feels the performance against Man United – the team twice came from behind – has given the team’s confidence a welcome lift.

“It gives you more confidence,” said the defender.

“Even at half-time when we were 2-1 down, the manager kept believing in us, and told us we had a brilliant chance of going back out there and winning the game.

“OK, we didn’t manage to win, but we did well.

“Going forward, we’ll take the positives, and if we show the same spirit from start to finish in every game, we won’t go far wrong.”

Newcastle hadn’t scored in their four previous games in all competitions.

“We’re scoring goals again, so there are definitely positives to take out of it,” added Dummett.

“We have been struggling recently with the defeats we have had.

“Despite playing well, we have not been finishing the chances we’ve been having.

“So what happened against Manchester United just shows what we are capable of doing and just as importantly, shows the character and spirit in the team to fight back like that and score three goals from losing position.”

Dummett struck with his left foot from 18 yards after a ball into the box was cleared as far as him.

It was only the Wales international’s third goal for the club.

“My goal against Liverpool was pretty good as well,” said 24-year-old.

“I also scored against Palace in the Cup, but both my Premier League goals have been important ones, so I’m pretty happy right now though obviously, we would have liked the three points.”

Asked to describe his emotions as the ball hit the back of the net, he went on: “It’s something that is really hard to describe.

“If you haven’t done it, then it’s a weird one to describe – just an incredible feeling to score at the Gallowgate end, something I always dreamed of as a boy.

“They were all taking the p*** out of me (in the dressing room after the game) saying it was an own goal! But that’s when the enormity of the situation really hits you.

“You switch on your phone and see all the messages congratulating you – which I don’t normally get – there were about 30 of them straightaway.

“It was a really proud moment for me as a local lad, and, hopefully, there’ll be a few more goals in the future.

“This is my team – I was here as a boy, came through the ranks and fortunately for me I’ve done it. I’ve scored three times for Newcastle now, twice here at St James’s Park, and that’s something I am very proud of.”

Goalscoring has been Newcastle’s biggest problem this season.

“We knew we were creating chances, but we weren’t putting them away,” said Dummett. “So it’s a case of carrying on creating chances, and if we do what we’ve done against Manchester United, we won’t go far wrong.”
