Of the 555 votes cast at the time of writing, 88% said they backed the idea the network should be brought back into public ownership.

Some shared tips on how to find cheaper tickets as they voiced frustration at the cost of some fares, with alternative transport prefered to help keep down costs.

Others asked if bringing them back into public ownership would result in a drop in fares.

Graham Scaife said: “Not only the railways but electricity, gas and water prices have all risen ridiculously since being privatised.

“Of cause putting them back into public ownership would reduce the fares/bills.

“No shareholders to pay dividends to for a start.”

Pete Snowdon asked: “How much do people think rail fares will go up under public ownership?

“The drivers and workers will still want above inflation rates of wage increases or they will go on strike.

“The cost to run, purchase, repair, maintain services will not decrease...perhaps everyone thinks that the Labour money trees will help.”

Sidney Stromberg wrote: “Quoted £243 for two people return from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

“It was way way cheaper to take the car. Absolute joke.”
