Cyclist taken to hospital following incident in Cleadon Village

A cyclist in his sixties has been taken to hospital following a reported collision with a car in Cleadon Village.

Police were called to Sunderland Road at 11.20am on Friday, December 18, following reports of a crash involving a car and a cyclist.

The cyclist, a man in his sixties, was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by ambulance for a check-up.

Northumbria Police confirmed the pair involved exchanged details but said there is a chance the cyclist may have lost balance and fell off as the car overtook him.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 11.20am today (Friday) we received a report of a collision involving a car and a cyclist on Sunderland Road, South Shields.

“The cyclist was taken to hospital for a check-up. “

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 11.08am to a patient injured on Sunderland Road.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and two hazardous area response teams.

"One male patient, believed to be in his sixties, was transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”
