Dog has lucky escape after falling down sinkhole near Souter Lighthouse

A dog had a lucky escape after falling down a sinkhole while out on a walk with his owner.

Emergency services were called to an area near Souter Lighthouse near Marsden, at around 1.48pm on Sunday, January 19, following reports that a dog had fallen into a sinkhole.

South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade and Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team used rope rescue equipment to reach the canine before it was reunited with its owner.

A spokesman for the service said: “The team were tasked with our colleagues from to Souter after a report of a dog falling into a sinkhole.

“The team set up their rope rescue equipment and a technician was lowered to recover the dog.

“The dog was then reunited with its owner who was advised to have it checked by a vet.

“Please remember to keep dogs on a lead when walking near the cliffs.

“Remember for all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”

Safety warnings were issued in 2019 after a sinkhole appeared near Souter Lighthouse close to existing clifftop barriers.

A section of the coastal path between the Lime Kilns and the Grotto was cordoned off while investigations were carried out.

This followed a survey which suggested Marsden Bay may be at increased risk of erosion with caves forming under the coastal paths.

To improve safety for visitors, council bosses are looking to reposition fencing further inland between Marsden Grotto and the closed clifftop car park.
