Fire chief slams Bonfire Night attacks on firefighters as crews called to nearly 600 incidents
“Attacks on firefighters and emergency service personnel are completely unacceptable”
Chief Fire Officer Stewart Nicholson has hit out at attacks against his officers across the Tyne and Wear area on Bonfire Night with photographs submitted to the Echo showing damage to fire appliances.

He also condemned antisocial behaviour experienced last night, with Tyne & Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) firefighters being called to eight large fires, 39 secondary fires, and four wheelie bin fires.
In total, TWFRS firefighters were called to 597 incidents. Chief fire officer Nicholson also confirmed three fire appliances were deliberately targeted whilst firefighters were travelling to and from an incident, resulting in smashed windscreens and windows.
There were three confirmed attacks on firefighters, with a fourth incident currently under review.
Chief fire officer Nicholson said: “Our firefighters, fire control team and support staff worked tirelessly throughout the day and night, responding to incidents across Tyne and Wear and providing reassurance to the public.
"While the vast majority of people celebrated responsibly, it is disappointing that a small minority chose to engage in anti-social behaviour. Attacks on firefighters and emergency service personnel are completely unacceptable. Our crews are there to protect people, property and communities, and no one should face abuse or violence while carrying out their duties.
"I would once again like to thank all of our Service colleagues, partner agencies, and the public for their support."
In most cases, the number of fire related incidents were down on last year.
Chief fire officer Nicholson added: “In the lead up to Bonfire Night, we worked closely with our blue light colleagues, local authorities and partner agencies to prepare for the increased demand on our services and to help keep our communities safe.
“I would like to thank the residents of Tyne and Wear for their continued support throughout what is traditionally our busiest time of year.”
