Food bank donation point opens in South Shields interchange

A collection point allowing travelers to make donations to help those in need has been set up inside the £21million building, which opened last year.

Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, is running the collection all this week to help families who are struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic.

The collection point is located at the Nexus travel shop in the bus concourse area of the interchange. It will be there each day, 8am to 11am, until Friday 10 July.

All donations will go to the Hospitality and Hope Food Bank in South Tyneside.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “The focus of our food bank collections will focus on South Tyneside this week. We’re at South Shields interchange and all donations will go to a local food bank.

“Metro is right at the heart of the communities it serves so this collection is the least that we can do to help people at this time of national emergency.

“This will aid people in the most deprived areas , many of who are struggling even more due to the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Donations should be non-perishable items, for example long-life milk, tinned fish, pasta, rice, and other canned items. Please speak to a member of staff if you have items to spare and they can show you where to drop it off.”
