Leanne Ferriday was less than impressed with the idea: “Do people in hospitality not work hard enough in December??” she said.

“Yeah lets throw another bank holiday in so they have even less time with their families.... no no no. People have been complaining about having to work Boxing Day in retail... hospitality don’t get any time off over the festive period.”

David Jack said: “We should have St George's Day and celebrate being English, welcoming everyone to join in, while Carol Milne thought a day off between ‘August and Christmas’ was a better idea.

Alan Hudson also thought the suggested timing was too early in the year: “Not at that time year but need another one,” he said, while David Richardson argued: “When Brexit is hopefully finally delivered it should be a national public holiday.”
