Fans had been prevented from attending the game due to covid restrictions, but were cheering on from home at the team sealed victory in a dramatic game, with the match screened free on BT Sport.

He said: “The Mayoress and I would like to congratulate Hebburn Town FC on winning the FA Vase final at Wembley – what a remarkable achievement!”

“I’m sure the team are absolutely delighted with their victory, as are the thousands of supporters who have cheered them on back home in South Tyneside.

“Although the match had to be played behind closed doors, fans came together to show their support by painting the town black and yellow, the team’s club colours, in the run up to the match and it’s clear that this encouragement really paid off.

“Congratulations Hebburn Town FC – you’ve certainly made the borough proud.”

Fans at home had pulled out all the stops, with shops and homes decked out in black and yellow, Hebburn Town’s club colours.

South Shields town hall had been lit in yellow and black stripes, and the club’s flag flown from public buildings, with electronic boards displaying good luck messages also dotted round the borough’s main roads.

Hebburn Town had joined other clubs and organisations in the social media boycott over online abuse, but made an exception for Monday so they could keep fans updated on the big day.

Some others took to social media to congratulate the team, including club sponsors Chase Holmes declaring: “WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!”

Whitburn Golf Club tweeted: “Congratulations to Hebburn Town on winning the FA Vase at Wembley today.”

The Hebburn Branch of the Sunderland Supporters’ Association tweeted: “Well done all @HebburnTown a fantastic achievement you did Hebburn and South Tyneside proud #Hornets #BlackAndYellow #OhHebburnisaplaceonEarth”
