Jarrow's Sid Gibson wins regional photography competition with wildlife images

Sid Gibson, 65, has won a place on the front cover of an environmental charity’s annual calendar.

Sid was on an early morning ramble when he snapped the winning image, which features on the cover of the calendar.

The calendar will be sold to raise funds for Tyne Rivers Trust, which is a charity dedicated to looking after the River Tyne and its tributaries – including the Don.

Sid Gibson said: “I got into wildlife photography a few years ago after suffering a heart attack. I started going out for walks and starting to take a small compact camera with me and now over the years I’ve moved on to better cameras.”

The stand-out image is one of 12 shots taken by people who live and work in the Tyne catchment and donated to the trust as part of its annual photography competition.

The winning shots from the competition are made into a calendar, which is sold to raise money to support the work that the trust does to improve the river.

The production costs of the calendar have been covered for the third year by EGGER – the chipboard factory which sits alongside the River Tyne at Hexham.

Director of Tyne Rivers Trust, Dr Ceri Gibson said: “It’s fantastic that this majestic image was taken on the River Don which thanks to a lot of hard work is gradually improving.”
