The trio, made up Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, both of whom are from South Shields, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock have made history at the Brit Awards on Tuesday, May 11 by becoming the first female act to win Best British Group.

The girl group were presented with the award at London’s O2 Arena, with Perrie Edwards struggling to hold back her emotions.

When accepting the award, Perrie commented: “Guys, we’ve just made history! I’m emotional.”

Leigh-Anne Pinnock used the moment to highlight how difficult it can be for women within the music industry.

She added: “It’s not easy being a female in the UK pop industry.

“We have seen white male dominance, misogyny, sexism and lack of diversity.

“We are proud of how we have stuck together, stood our ground and surrounded ourselves with strong women and are now using our voices more than ever.”

The pop singer, who shared a photo of her baby bump on Instagram, wrote: “So happy to be on this wild journey with my soulmate. Me + Him = You. We can’t wait to meet you baby Ox!”

The 27-year-old is the second member of the girl group to announce a pregnancy this month.
