Meet the South Shields couple who've been running Green Street Post Office for 40 years

A popular Post Office at the heart of a South Shields community is celebrating 40 years in business.

The Green Street Post Office on Frederick Street, has been run by husband and wife team Subash and Anita Pandit for four decades.

The couple took over the existing Post Office on New Green Street in Laygate on October 1, 1980, before moving to nearby Frederick Street in order to expand the business.

Since then it has been at the centre of the community, building up a loyal following of customers thanks to its dedicated team of staff.

From helping with tricky forms to delivering essentials to vulnerable residents during lockdown, the team of six staff are well known for going above and beyond for the community.

And now the Post Office is celebrating its major milestone, with Mr Pandit saying he has ‘loved every minute’ of his years of service.

The 66-year-old retired magistrate said: “We have has a fantastic team of staff over the years.

"Some of the staff who come to work for us stay until they retire or have to give up work – no one leaves of their own volition as they all enjoy it.

"The customers that come in are really friendly and the staff enjoy providing a service that helps the public.

"People even come from miles away to ourselves for the service that they receive from the staff.

"I have enjoyed every minute of it – the years seemed to have gone by very quickly!”

One staff member, Neil Hall, was also highlighted for his fundraising efforts to support cancer and Alzheimer's charities.

Mr Pandit says the business prides itself on helping people in the community whenever they can.

“During lockdown we were making sure the elderly were OK through the likes of picking up their pension for them or dropping off things that they needed – the staff are very good in that respect,” he said.

"I think one of the things that makes us stand out is the friendliness of staff and the service that they get.

"It’s a a complete package and a place where the people who come in feel comfortable as they know who they are dealing with and know the staff by their names.”
