Praise for South Tyneside's volunteer army

South Tyneside’s volunteer army has been praised for its dedication in helping the borough through the coronavirus crisis.

South Tyneside Council leader, Coun Iain Malcom, has used Volunteer Week to pay tribute to those who have “stepped up to the plate” in recent months and helped combat the effects of the pandemic on people in the borough

Coun Malcolm said: “There is no doubt that the last three months have been extraordinarily challenging, but the silver lining is that the value and power of South Tyneside’s community cooperation has been illuminated for all to see.

“The borough has a long and proud history of civic and community pride; people genuinely care about where they live and those who live near them and have a desire to help those around them.

“Through our #LoveSouthTyneside campaign we have recruited more than 200 volunteers, matching their skills to projects led by partners including the NHS, South Tyneside Homes, Inspire South Tyneside and other local third sector groups.”

He added: “This army of volunteers have really stepped up to the plate, especially over the last few months. They have helped us deliver essential services in a safe and sustainable way that our residents can rely on.”

Coun Malcolm said that, from the very start of the pandemic, volunteers worked with the council to establish a Shielding Hub to ensure those at the highest risk with no other support had reliable access to food and medications quickly.

He added: “We increased the regular financial support we give to the borough’s three established food banks. Their volunteers work tirelessly all year round to support those experiencing not only hunger, but issues such as loneliness and mental and financial wellbeing.

“Almost 30 organisations have secured £234,000 which is being used to help ensure vital supplies and support are delivered to those in need.

“The actions of these local heroes must never be forgotten. It is for this reason that the council plans to consider to bestow the Freedom of the Borough on all key workers, all those people who have helped to keep vital services running during this crisis.

“As a Co-operative Council, it is only by working hand in hand with our third sector that we will recover stronger from this pandemic.

“In the meantime, my thanks go to all our key workers and volunteers who continue to fight the war against coronavirus and selflessly support our communities.”
