Rachael Ewen and partner Sarah Wood contacted the Gazette with an invite to someone who may be in need of company for the big day.

The couple, of the Scotch Estate, hope their kind gesture will set a good example for their son Jack, seven, start a new tradition and transform someone’s Christmas Day.

Rachael, who is originally from Scotland, told the Gazette: “For years I have always wanted to do it but I have always been with my parents – I hate the idea of people being alone and not having anyone to talk to or share how they are feeling, or what’s going on with them. It just breaks my heart.”

This year marks the first Christmas that Rachael, Sarah and Jack are spending in their own home along with dogs Angus and Connie, away from the rest of their families.

While they are looking forward to relaxing and enjoying a meal together, they hope to find a person to take up another seat at the table for lunch.

This could be an elderly person on their own, a single parent and child or someone who simply does not have anywhere else to go.

The couple say there is plenty of space and plenty of food to go around.

“I know some people might not want to come forward because they feel like they are a burden, but someone coming round would help us,” Rachael said.

“It would help us show Jack the meaning of being kind and help us not waste food. This could be the start of a new tradition.”

She added: “Little bits of kindness can mean the world to somebody.”
