School children spread festive cheer at Lawe Top Christmas carol service

There was plenty of Christmas cheer as pupils from Hadrian Primary School sang their hearts out at the annual event, which takes place at the Harbour Lights pub.

The tradition, which has been going for around 10 years, sees the local community and regulars from the Lawe Top pubs, enjoy a festive sing-a-long around the Christmas tree.

Around 150 people gathered on Thursday, December 12, although the miserable weather forced them to move the event indoors.

The Harbour Lights provided food and cupcakes for the children afterwards and there was mulled wine was for the parents.

“It went really well and we had a great turn out, which would have been even better if it wasn’t for the weather,” said Chris McKellar, landlord at the Harbour Lights.

The new landlords, who took over in September after the closure of the Holborn Rose and Crown, were keen to keep the tradition going.

“It’s something that’s been done for so long, it’s important to keep these things going as long as possible,” said Chris.

“It’s a time for the Lawe Top community to get together and have a bit of a sing-song. It’s always nice at this time of year to bring the community together and have the chance to meet new people.

He continued: “Having come from the Rosie there was a lot of old traditions down there and we have had great support from the community since we took over, which has really been good.

“South Shields is a very family orientated town, so working with the local schools allows us the play a little part in the area.”

The Harbour Lights also teamed up with local businessman Kevin Millar, who sponsored a Christmas tree to go outside the pub.

Chris added: “It was so nice to see everyone getting into the Christmas spirit and joining in with the songs, hopefully it’s a tradition we can keep going for years to come.”
