Chris Camps, 39, will be completing the 130-mile run from Whitehaven to South Shields in around 36 hours, without sleeping, only stopping at selected checkpoints to refuel.

The run, his weekend, is in aid of Chris’ mum Joan Camps, 68, who was diagnosed with dementia.

He is raising funds for Dementia UK, the leading dementia charity in the country.

Joan’s troubles began nine years ago after suffering a stroke and losing her peripheral vision before having a second stroke in 2016. She was diagnosed with dementia in 2020.

Over the last 18 months, Chris said he and his family have seen a big change in Joan’s mental health due to her condition and the pandemic, something the family are still trying to come to terms with.

Chris said: “It's really important to support people suffering with terrible illnesses like dementia. It’s massive that people suffering get the support they need with care and hopefully we can eventually eradicate this disease.

“I’m looking forward to the run, it’s definitely something different. I’ve done a few ultramarathons before and the furthest I’ve run is 55 miles, but this is a completely different ballgame.

"It’s going to be a massive challenge but I’m pretty confident I can do it but I’m going to have some great support around me.”

Chris is an avid runner and has been a member of South Shields Harriers since 2018, regularly taking part in running events.

Part of the money raised from the run will go to supporting Joan with any spare money going towards Dementia UK.
