South Tyneside Council start legal process to remove travellers’ caravans

South Tyneside Council says it has commenced the necessary process to seek the removal of a number of travellers’ caravans on land behind Commercial Road in South Shields.

The vehicles were first spotted near the Trimmers Arms in the Holborn area on Wednesday, August 5 – and more than two weeks on the vehicles remain on the council-owned site.

Disgruntled residents made complaints to South Tyneside Council which said it has been monitoring the situation since the travellers’ caravans first arrived on the council land at the back of Commercial Road over two weeks ago.

And steps have now been taken to remove the vehicles and their occupants from the site.

In a statement, a South Tyneside Council spokesperson said: “The Council has continued to monitor the situation and has now commenced the necessary legal process to seek removal of those occupying the site.”
