Brett Convery attacked the male officer on Sunday, November 22, in Jarrow.

By Monday, November 23, he was beginning 18 weeks in jail after he admitted the assault and a second charge of causing £100 of damage to a Northumbria Police van.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court deemed his offending serious because it was “aggravated by the defendant’s previous record of offending”.

Convery, 38, of Derby Street, Jarrow was imprisoned for 18 weeks for the assault and received a four-week concurrent jail term, to run as part of the longer sentence, for the November 22 criminal damage offence.

Receiving credit for his guilty pleas, he was also ordered to pay £125 in compensation, a £128 victim surcharge and £85 prosecution costs at a rate of £10 per fortnight from the beginning of March next year.
