According to the Sea Watch Foundation, 30 whale and dolphin species have been recorded in UK waters, with the bottlenose dolphin and the harbour porpoise among the most popular.
Dolphins are often spotted along the North East coastline and recently two dolphins were seen near Roker Pier.
There have also been numerous reported sightings in South Shields, Tynemouth, Seaham, Hartlepool as well as Northumberland.
The 'Roker and Seaburn dolphin watch’ Facebook group is also a good way to keep up to date with the latest sightings.

5. Seaton Sluice
There have been a number of dolphin sightings at Seaton Sluice in recent weeks. Nineteen bottlenose dolphins were spotted on June 3, 2021 near Rocky Island and fifteen were seen a few days before on May 31, 2021. Fifteen bottlenose dolphins were spotted on May 27, 2021 and 20 bottlenose dolphins were spotted on May 26, 2021. Another sighting, reported on May 24, 2021, confirmed that 35 bottlenose dolphins were seen in the area. 6. Seaham coast
The Sea Watch Foundation has also confirmed sightings of dolphins in Seaham. Most recently four bottlenose dolphins were spotted off the Seaham coast on February 22, 2021. Photo: Stu Norton/JPI

7. Berwick in Northumberland

8. Whitley Bay
A number of dolphins have been spotted in the Whitley Bay area, according to the Sea Watch Foundation. 30 dolphins were seen on May 24, 2021, while three bottlenose dolphins were seen in Tynemouth, on May 20, 2021. Another 30 bottlenose dolphins were spotted on May 19. Photo: Jane Coltman/JPI
