Tributes are being paid across the UK to remember those who tragically lost their lives between 1939 and 1944 – with many of you sending your own photographs in tribute to loved ones, the heroes of then and the heroes of today. 7. A love of flying
Harry Oxman joined the RAF in 1940 before he was assigned as a navigator for the Sunderland Flying Boat. After being dispatched to the West Coast of Africa, he was taken seriously ill with malaria in 1944. He was put on a boat in a body bag ready to be thrown overboard but coughed which saved his life.
